» Atrium Garden Center History | | 1970: Started as the Old Mill Garden Center on 1.5 acres. | | 1989: Tim and Diane James began plans for 200 acres of vacant land near Lake Geneva, WI. The land was later converted into a large nursery. Today, all Atrium Garden Center’s trees and shrubs are transported from this off-site facility, which includes a huge variety of Maple species including Autumn Blaze, Red Sunset, and Crimson Queen. | | | | 1995: Tim and Diane James purchased Old Mill Garden Center and immediately started upgrading the garden center’s appearance both indoors and out. | | 1996: Demolished and re-built Old Mill Garden Center, and expanded the facility to 6 acres (plans for building the Atrium Garden Center were also in the conceptual stages). | | 2002: Achieved approval to build a "brand new" facility. Burned Old Mill Garden Center to the ground with the help of Lake Zurich Fire Department who used the facility as a training exercise. | | 2003: Opened the "new" Atrium Garden Center featuring magnificent 1-acre greenhouses where they grow all hanging baskets, potted annuals, 1-gallon perennials, chrysanthemums and poinsettia's. Also housed in the greenhouses is a full collection of opulent, one-of-a-kind fountains and statuary from Henri Studio. Outdoors, the Atrium proudly features an expansive collection of trees, shrubs, and evergreens from their 200-acre nursery in Wisconsin. Uniquely-shaped topiaries are also available. The Atrium's two-tier 14,000 square foot garden shop includes a vast selection of home and garden accents, tools, birding supplies, garden art, and a marvelous selection of both stone and fiberglass containers. Upstairs, the store features upscale contemporary patio furniture for outdoor living environments and sun porches. | | | | 2004: Received the prestigious 2003 Lake Zurich Area Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Architectural Expansion Award. | | 2005: Purchased Sinbad, Atrium Garden Center’s store mascot and buddy, from a local breeder in Long Grove. Sinbad is a Green Winged Macaw Parrot who’s native homeland is South Africa. Sinbad is quite young−considering that his parrot species live until they are 75-80 years old! Sinbad hopes you stop by and visit him soon! |
